In 1986, Soper joined the Swiss Eggenberger team driving the new Ford Merkur XR4Ti in the European Championship. The car was quick if somewhat unreliable, but
Soper knew that the new Sierra Cosworth was in the wings and was happy to put up with the problems. A win in the last round at Estoril being little
consolation for a difficult year.
When the Sierra Cosworth finally arrived in 1987, it was just in time to contest the new WTC. Soper came 6th overall, and would have done better if he
had not been disqualified from his controversial win at Bathurst. It was back to the ETCC in 1988, Soper taking 6 wins in the
series. He would have won the championship but for rival Rouse taking points off him at the Silverstone TT race.

After the demise of the ETC at the end of 1998, Soper moved to contest the German Touring Car Championship with BMW, a manufacturer he was to stay
with for the next 11 years. He started with the Zakspeed team, alongside Dane Kris Nissen, and led in the early part of the season finally finishing
5th with 2 wins. In 1990 he moved to the Italian Bigazzi team, again in an M3, achieving 4th overall with 2 wins and 4 seconds.
