Alfa Romeo 155

Rotating the head allows the colder (and denser) air front the front of the car to be fed straight into the engine. A large and expensive carbon fibre air box contols the air flow into the throttles, keeping it away from the power-sapping high under-bonnet temperatures. Each of the four throttles feature a soleniod operated injector up-stream of the butterfly valve.

The reverse head also allows the designers lower and tilt the engine rearwards by 27 degrees to bring much of its weight inside the wheelbase. This has resulted in a favourable 67%-33% front-rear weight distribution for the cars.

Inside the engine, each cylinder has a "square" bore and stroke of 38mm. into which are fitted Mahle aluminium pistons, each with 2 chrome plated cast-iron piston rings. A single Champion spark plug is centrally located in the roof of each combustion chamber and ignition is controlled by a Formula 1 standard Magnetti Marelli management system, which features a separate coil for each plug.

Engine lubrication is managed by an Abarth designed dry sump system, with oil being fed by a Bosh pump from a 12 litre tank housed in the boot. A single oil cooler is positioned next to the main custom built water raditator which is housed behind the front grille.

Power output for the car is estimated at a conservative 280-290 bhp, but as with all SuperTouring teams an exact figure is never quoted. Engine re-builds are scheduled for every 700kms, and each rebuild takes 80 man hours.
